Quinceañera Hair Extensions: Timeline, Styles and How Many Sets

By SoCal Hair Co., hair extension store in Anaheim, California · Updated

Quick answer

Buy her clip-ins before the hair trial, usually 1 to 2 months before the party, so the stylist can blend and curl them. Plan on 2 sets if her hair is thick or the style is very full, match the shade in daylight to her ends, and have her take them out the night of the party.

Long, full curls under a tiara are one of the most-requested quinceañera looks, and most girls' own hair isn't quite long or thick enough to hold that style all night. Clip-in extensions solve it without glue, salon installs or damage, and she can wear them again for prom, graduation and weddings. Here's how to plan them so there are no surprises on the big day.

Timeline

WhenWhat to do
3 to 4 months beforeBook the hair and makeup artist and choose the general style (down curls, half-up, high ponytail or updo).
6 to 8 weeks beforeMatch her shade in daylight and order the extensions, so they arrive well before the trial.
Hair trial (usually 1 to 2 months before)Bring the extensions. The stylist places, blends and curls them with the tiara on, and you take photos of the result.
1 to 2 weeks beforePractice clipping them in at home once or twice. Wash them only if they have product buildup from the trial.
The day beforeBrush the wefts gently and lay them flat in order (1 to 7) so they're ready.
The day ofClip them in before the stylist starts, or let the stylist place them. Take them out before she goes to sleep.

How many sets does she need?

One set (125 g) is enough for fine to medium hair. Quince styles are usually big and full, though, so if her hair is medium-thick or thick, or the style is lots of voluminous curls, plan on two sets (250 g). One set on thick hair makes the ends look thinner than her own hair, which shows in photos. Our sizing guide has a 30-second check.

Styles that work with clip-ins

  • Down, with big curls: the classic. All 7 wefts (or more with 2 sets), curled together with her own hair.
  • Half-up with the tiara: the top section is pulled back over the tiara area, so place the highest weft about an inch below where the tiara's combs sit.
  • High ponytail with curls: clip-ins work because each weft sits under her own hair. Use the nape and middle wefts and skip the side pieces if they peek out.
  • Updo or chongo: extensions add volume to the bun. Use fewer wefts and pin them into the style.

Curls that last all night

Human hair holds curl like natural hair, so the stylist can curl the extensions and her hair together. Use heat protectant and a moderate temperature; many brands suggest about 300°F or less, and lower for blonde shades. Let curls cool pinned up before releasing them, and finish with hairspray. Pack a few bobby pins and a small brush in her bag for touch-ups between the vals and the surprise dance.

Matching the damas, mom and the court

If the damas want long hair too, each girl should match her own ends, not the quinceañera's, so the shade numbers may be different. That's normal. Groups of 5 or more sets get 10% off, and 10 or more get 15% off. You can bring everyone to our Anaheim store to match in person, or send us a daylight photo of each girl's hair. See our quinceañera group page.

Budget

One set is $199 and two sets are $398, with free shipping. At checkout you can split the payment into 4 interest-free payments with Klarna or Afterpay (subject to approval). Because the hair is reusable, many families plan for her to wear it again at prom, graduation and family weddings.

After the party

Take the extensions out before sleeping, brush out the hairspray gently from the ends up, and wash them with a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Let them air dry flat, then store them flat in their bag. With care, the same set is ready for the next event.

One honest noteFor hygiene reasons, hair can't be returned or exchanged once it's opened, so we always help families match the shade first. Come in, send photos, or ask us anything in English or Spanish.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should we buy extensions for a quince?

Before the hair trial. Hair and makeup are often booked a few months ahead, and the trial usually happens a month or two before the party, so have the extensions in hand by then.

Will clip-ins hold a tiara?

Yes. The tiara sits on top of her own hair at the crown, and the wefts sit lower, so they don't get in the way. Ask the stylist to place the top weft about an inch below where the tiara's combs go.

Can the damas match too?

Yes. Each girl should match her own ends, so they may need different shade numbers. We can help match the whole court, in person in Anaheim or by photo.

Can she wear them again after the party?

Yes. Human hair clip-ins can be washed and reused for graduation, weddings and other events if they're stored flat and cared for.

Do you offer group pricing for a court?

Yes. Group orders of 5 or more sets get a discount. See our group page for the current tiers.
